DROP AND GIVE ME 20…DOWNWARD DOGS!
In an effort to combat the decreasing fitness levels of incoming recruits, Army training facilities are adopting a new training regimen that includes yoga, Pilate’s, and more functional strength training.
This new routine hopes to not only breed soldiers who are in better shape, but who are better prepared for the field. Apparently, the more traditional exercises are giving way to movement patterns that reflect the activities these young men and women will be involved in from day to day. By incorprating these exercises the Army hopes to also lessen the amount of injuries acquired during training.
While the Times article focuses greatly on how this new routine will help curb the effects of a less fit generation, it never asked what I thought was the most germane question…WHAT TOOK SO LONG?
In a time where the positive effects of functional training are being touted by numerous athletes and medical professionals, I am surprised our Armed Forces are so late to the party. Coupled by the fact that this country gets fatter every decade, it is baffling that a change hasn’t been made before now.
Please don’t misunderstand me. I have nothing but the utmost respect for those who protect our country, and certainly hope this new training program gets the results it hopes for: More fit soldiers who get injured less often.
Take a look at the article and tell me what you think…
