Help me run the NYC Marathon
Yesterday I was diagnosed with a stress fracture in my fourth metatarsal head just two months away from the NYC Marathon!!!!
I wanted to get some ideas for training with this injury. Ideally once the boot is off in a month, I can pick-up training close to where I left off and still run the NYC Marathon in November.
I read an article about Deep Water Running; this makes me wonder ‘would I be able to maintain my current level of fitness by running in the water?’. Does anyone have a deep-water-marathon training program?

Sorry to hear about your injury Adam. Come on up and run on our alter g treadmill. This allows you to run at reduced body weights (20% to 100%). We just got it installed on Wednesday. Check out alterg.com for more info. It is the same concept as an underwater treadmill.
Gabe – thanks for the offer – I will be there this week! How many days per week / how long of sessions would be good for maraton training. I miss my long runs…
Adam,
Sorry to hear about your stress fracture as I know how frustrating injuries can be as I personally underwent five surgeries between the ages of 12 and 20. As Gabe mentioned, your best option is to incorporate the alter G into your training. Although this injury is compromising your training, what do you attribute it to? Do you think it resulted from a training error, improper mechanics, or some other risk factor? Take this time to reflect as difficult as it may be and realize that there are several other aspects of your musculoskeletal system that you can focus on while the stress fracture heals. For example, non weightbearing hip strengthening exercises, hip flexibility, and building strength and stability around your shoulder blades. You are in a great position regarding available resources. I would also take this time to watch some youtube videos of some of the elite distance runners who compete in the marathon and ironman to better understand mechanics. There is some great footage of Craig Alexander for example. We can gladly discuss this stuff over the upcoming week. Make sure to use good judgement as you return and do it in a stage progression. Hope you have a great rest of the Labor Day weekend
Chris makes an excellent point. Everything has a purpose so stop stressing over what you cannot do and think of what you can gain from the additional time available. As far as the alter g goes, it would depend upon the fracture site, how old it is, whether it is healing. My guess would be, given the time of year, at least 2x/week. You can alos offer to be my guinea pig on whether vibration can improve healing times on fractures. Everyone believe this is the case, thus the idea behind bone stimulators, but no one wants to get sued. Call me today.
